He is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College (physics), the Peace Corps (South Africa) and the University of Missouri (journalism). He helped craft its sensibility and has a deep understanding of how digital journalism can often be even better than print journalism. Kevin has been central to The Upshot since even before we named it The Upshot. In addition to Amanda, I’m naming Kevin Quealy as a deputy editor of The Upshot, alongside Laura Chang and Damon Darlin, who have likewise been crucial to its success. In the future, visual journalists, and those, like Amanda, whose background spans both words and visuals, are a crucial part of the future leadership of The Times. Visual journalism – graphics, interactives, photography, video, virtual reality – is a growing part of our report, and it’s an area where we excel. But I also want to note an underlying message in her appointment. I have asked Amanda to take on this job because she is the best person to lift The Upshot to new heights. Olaf College, received a master’s degree in statistics and worked for the Federal Reserve. Before coming to us, she graduated from St. (where she quickly impressed her colleagues by standing up to an outside contributor who tried to change the definition of recessions in a chart.) In addition to her work with The Upshot, she has played a leadership role in the Graphics department. Steve Duenes hired Amanda at The Times after her stint as a Graphics summer intern in 2004. David Leonhardt says simply, “Amanda is probably the smartest journalist I’ve ever worked with.” As with so much of our best work, it depended on deep knowledge, and Amanda’s knowledge and reporting background span some of today’s biggest news subjects, starting with politics and economics. My personal favorite is probably the reinvention of election-night coverage that she and Nate Cohn led, which allowed Times readers to follow election returns more smartly than they could anywhere else. She has been central to its success, both in shaping its vision from the first planning stages and in helping execute much of its best journalism. I’m pleased to announce that Amanda will become the next editor of The Upshot. ![]() She is responsible for some of the most innovative work The Times has done over the last decade, and her input has lifted the work of dozens of Times journalists. ![]() She’s creative and collegial and has a rare force of intellect.
